The Program

Few scholars in the history of Islam have had as much tawfiq (enabling grace) as the great Imam Yahya b. Sharaf al-Nawawi. His written works have been translated to dozens of languages and influenced millions of Muslims all across the world.  A pillar of the Shafi'i school of law and preeminent scholar of hadith, his knowledge of the sciences of Islam had few peers in his age. But beyond the outward sciences, the great Imam was a master of the inward dimensions as well, as the biography of his life clearly delineates.

Of Imam al-Nawawi's most widely read works is his collection of 42 sayings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , may the blessings of God be upon him, often called Al-Arba'in al-Nawawiyya. The Imam writes in his introduction:

"I considered it best to bring together forty hadith... each hadith being one of the great precepts of religion, described by religious scholars as being "the axis of Islam " or "the half of Islam" or "the third of it ", or the like, and to make it a rule that these forty hadith be [classified as] sahih (rigorously authenticated) and that the majority of them be in the sahih collections of Al-Bukhari and Muslim."

A study of these hadith, then, represents the internalization of the meanings of the greatest of Prophetic traditions.  Join us as we take an in-depth look at one of the greatest short collections of Prophetic sayings.

Shaykh Samer al-Nass

Shaykh Samer al-Nass of Damascus, Syria, is one of the foremost Islamic Scholars of our time, with a wide mastery of subjects including the four schools of thought in Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) and the 10 modes of recitation of the Holy Quran.  He is also well known for his tremendous Love of the Prophet ﷺ .  Check the full bio here, or listen to what other Shaykhs mentions about Shaykh Samer.

"If he (Shaykh Samer) ever comes to Chicago again, I wouldn't miss it if it means that you had to crawl... We are very blessed to have someone like him come here"
-Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

The Ijaza System

One of the great traditions of Islamic scholarship is the ijaza system, whereby a student of knowledge would obtain certification or license in a classical text and thus be part of the chain that extends back to the author of the work. A student who is granted an ijaza is, in turn, authorized to teach the text to others, thus continuing the chain.  Shaykh Samer, may God preserve him, has studied in depth with many of the great scholars of hadith in our time.  Among his many ijazas in fields such as Quran, Fiqh, and Aqida, he is licensed in the 40 Hadith of Imam al-Nawawi and has agreed to give ijaza to students of this program who attend the sessions and learn these Prophetic pearls.  As such, this seminar represents a unique opportunity to be a part of the blessed chain that extends back to Imam al-Nawawi and, ultimately, the Noble Prophet ﷺ himself.  You can read more on the ijaza here.
